Creating a photo book can be time consuming and tedious. Through the years I’ve learned how to make individual images look as good as possible, select out the proper images to tell the story of a journey, an event or an adventure and absorbed the tricks and tips offered by the variety of photo book “printers” available online.
Today I tried another photo book vendor. I selected 50ish images from a recent trip which I have in my SmugMug archive to check out what Montage has to offer. I simply started a book in Montage and then clicked on SmugMug to begin navigating to the specific folder with my pix. In addition to easy imports from the following services, Montage also offers easy “drag & drop” of images into their book creator.
To start, my images were cropped, watermarked, exposed property and color corrected in SmugMug. Montage instantly cropped the images further as the photos were “placed” into a standardized layout. Using “click & drag” I could swap which images were in which location on a page. I could also click on an picture and reposition so a different portion of the image would be displayed in the frame.
Moving images from a page layout to another layout requires additional time and creativity but it is possible. I had my book completed and ordered in about 1/2 hour.
The 6×6 inch, leather bound book with lay-flat pages is scheduled to arrive in about a week. The cost is a bit high ($39 for 30 pages) but shipping is reasonable. I’ll report back on the print and paper quality. Montage may be the perfect solution for those of you with quality images and little time to devote to creating your book.
